Since its launch in October 2021, the CSL-DNPW HWC Rapid Response Unit (RRU) has been on call 24/7 to respond to high-risk incidents where lives and livelihoods are under immediate threat.
In January 2024, the RRU team dedicated to addressing human-wildlife conflict reports, engaged in a two-week intensive training programme with Frontier. In addition to reviewing the team structure and implementing a more efficient working system, the team, now bolstered by additional personnel and two vehicles, also refined their communication skills, acquired further knowledge in human-wildlife conflict management, and explored life-saving techniques for critical medical situations.
A joint initiative between Department of National Parks & Wildlife and CSL, the team has grown from 12 to 17 members. To ensure we can quickly respond to human-wildlife conflict reports 24/7, the 17 members have been organised into three teams. This system enables two teams to be on active duty whilst the third team rests.
The RRU team is now better equipped to navigate human-wildlife conflict, build trust within the community, and optimise resources efficiently.
Thank you to Tom Whittle, Frontier Strategy Director, who led the training programme, and Elephant Crisis Fund who made this expansion possible.
As the first unit of its kind in Zambia, the CSL-DNPW RRU has set a new benchmark for collaborative, community-focused conflict response. The outstanding work of the team was recognised on the international stage when it was awarded the Best Ranger Team at the 2024 African Conservation Awards.
