The community clean sweep programme was established in 2020 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, which severely impacted the tourism industry and subsequently raised concerns about a potential increase in poaching. CSL partners with the Zambian Carnivore Programme to manage this initiative. The programme aims to increase anti-snaring patrols and support the household incomes of participating community members. Each sweep, led by a CSL Scout and DNPW Wildlife Police Officer, consists of five or six community members and targets known snaring hotspots. Beyond their impact on snare removal and household incomes, the community clean sweeps also engage communities in conservation efforts, and their consistent presence in South Luangwa serves as a deterrent to potential poachers.
